2022 Near Neighbor Luncheon

near neighbor luncheon

The “Near Neighbor Luncheon” was held on August 2nd at the Geismar Site. This annual event is held two times a year, usually in the spring and fall. Local nonprofit organizations join members of the Rubicon team for lunch to discuss upcoming community projects and how Rubicon can aid with their efforts.

One such organization is the Helping Hands of Ascension. The agency, located in Gonzales, was founded in 2005 and is a well-known local charity that supports seniors in our community in addition to local children’s education.

The relationship over the years between Rubicon and local nonprofit organizations has blossomed from being merely partners in the community into a close friendship. At Rubicon, we recognize cultivating relationships within our community provides a solid foundation for our future and the future of our community.

MDI Splitter Project Celebration

MDI Splitter

The completion of the MDI splitter project was celebrated on Wednesday, July 13 at the Geismar facility. Huntsman Chairman, President and CEO, Peter Huntsman hosted the event. The Attorney General of Louisiana Jeff Landry, local officials, key customers, suppliers, members of Huntsman’s senior leadership team and Geismar employees also attended.

Speaking at the event, Jan Buberl, Polyurethanes’ Vice President for the Americas region said, “Our new splitter bridges the gap between our upstream MDI manufacturing assets and the downstream needs of our customers—both domestic and international. Our mission is to deliver what our customers need to help them innovate and grow. This investment strengthens our ability to meet, and exceed, those expectations.”

Mark Dearman, Site Leader at Geismar, recognizes the hard work of the many people associated with the project. “Our thanks go to our construction partners, suppliers and every associate and contractor involved in the new splitter,” he said. “Even without factoring in the additional health and safety measures we needed to put in place for COVID, and the extreme weather events such as Hurricane Ida, the construction of a new splitter is a major undertaking.” The project was completed on time and incident free, demonstrating Huntsman’s focus and commitment to safe working practices.

Garrett Graves at Rubicon

Garrett Graves at Rubicon with Mark Dearman

On April 20th, the Geismar site received a special visit from our U.S. Congressman Garrett Graves to see our facility and learn more about the impact we have here in Louisiana and across our global businesses. The purpose of Congressman Graves’ visit was a follow-up to LCA meetings held earlier this year In Washington D.C. with General Manager, Mark Dearman, and our Huntsman Governmental Affairs team.

While in Washington, Mark met with Congressman Graves and several other members of the LA Congressional delegation to discuss current issues and concerns for the Louisiana Chemical Industry. Congressman Graves received a tour of the site and visited the MDI-3 control room, where he was able to visit with the operating team and see our technology at work.

The visit was concluded with a town hall meeting with many of our associates, whereby Congressman Graves shared his unique perspective on current events and answered questions on a broad range of topics including healthcare reform, foreign policy, defense, taxes, and the environment. Congressman Graves thoroughly enjoyed his visit and we hope to have him back again soon.

The students in East Ascension High School’s National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Curriculum enjoyed hearing from our Rubicon team about their personal career experiences, their journeys in the industry and the education routes available. They also talked about plant operations, safety importance and available job options. The students were filled with questions and really engaged in the conversation, so thank you to Ms. Maddie Easley for the invitation!
